The weather couldn’t be any better and the same can be said for the fishing. Tarpon and Permit have been our targets of choice this past week and will remain that for some time. The Tarpon bite has been just crazy down here in Boca Grande as
well as very steady in Tampa around the Sunshine Skyway Bridge as well as the beaches with great catches from Clearwater south all the way down past Boca Grande. Blue crabs and Threadfin Herring are the baits of choice with the crabs working better early morning and the Threadfins being better as the sun gets higher in the sky. The jig bite in Boca Grande Pass remains steady as well as long as you can tolerate the circus of boats. All in all we had 21 Tarpon on this week with 12 to the boat which is a pretty good ratio. Lots of soar armed fishermen.
The Permit bite remained steady as well even with the added boat pressure of last weekends holiday. We found our fish scattered around the reefs and wrecks just offshore from 3 to 17 miles with several of the inshore reefs and wrecks also holding these tasty fish. Our key to success was to not run our big motors over the structure. Just pull up close and get anchored up so you can fish to the piece. Most of our fish came off of small blue crabs fished deep with small split shot just up the line a little ways to get the bait down to the bottom. If you have trouble finding blue crabs, they will take a shrimp as well. Permit are some of our fiercest competitors out there so enjoy the battle.
