Attack on the Macks

Whether you fancy Spanish or King Mackeral the bite is in full swing. The inshore guys have it all at there finger tips. As the bait moves up the Bay so do the Spanish Macs. The markers along the south shore. The Sunshine Skyway fishing pier and Pinellas Point are all areas holding loads of Spanish Mackeral. Long Shank Gamakatzu 1/0 hooks with 40 or 50lb fluorocarbon leader will do the trick. The heavier leader and long shanks will help to cut down on the cut offs. Small to medium sized pilchards have been the bait of choice but a silver Johnson Spoon is deadly as well. These are a tremendous target species for the kids as the bite can last for hours.

        The Kingfish bite has been hot as well. The near shore reefs off of St. Pete Beach, Anna Maria Island and Dunedin have all been holding nice fish in the 10 to 25 lb range with lots of shots at 40 plus pound fish. Both slow Trolling and anchoring up will work with anchoring and chumming being my choice. Adding a chum bag and cutting up some small baits to add to the chum slick is almost a sure fire way to get the action going and keep it going. Be sure to purchase some Kingfish rigs at your local tackle store as these prerigged wire leaders will help your success rate.

The King's Are Finally Here

The King’s are here!!!!  With the bait showing up in force the King Mackerel have arrived just in time for the spring tournament season.  All you have to do is head west over any live bottom and look for schools of bait and sky rocketing kings.  The grouper bite is still on fire inside the skyway and off shore as well.  Trolling has been the ticket for many such as Mike Mahoney, director of the T.A. Mahoney Fishing Team.  Mike has been trolling stretch 30’s in the fifty foot range just off Saint Pete.  Vance Tice, of Tightlines Tackle has been using down riggers and jigs inside the skyway and catching plenty of gags as well.  The near shore wrecks are still holding plenty of Amberjack and the cobia and permit have shown up as well.
We fished Todd “The Fridge” right wing for the Tampa Bay Lighting this week on the AJ’s with fish to 40 pounds on top water.
 
On the inshore scene, redfish, redfish, redfish.  The Fort Desoto area has been flooded with huge schools of over slot reds.  Captain Mike Anderson has been doing extremely well on these schools and landing trout to 29” with Lightning Players Mike Smith and Paul Ranger.  There are also plenty of Spanish Mackerel all over the bay as well.  We also had a report of Captain Nick Winger of Apollo Beach jumping three large tarpon in the bay mid week as well.  I want all of you to remember that snook season is closed because of the winter fish kill.  Try to target other species to give such a great resource time to rebuild itself.  If you do this I promise the fish gods will smile upon you.

Game On!!!

The wait is over! The bait is thick and the fish are chewing. Everything is right in the world again. Well okay maybe that is a little dramatic, but it sure is nice to hit the water with a little confidence knowing your going to have a great day of fishing.

The winds have been very high all week but that did not stop us from catching several nice Redfish from 24 to 36 inches in length and some really big Trout up to 26 inches as well. The higher tides seemed to be best with the Reds while most of our bigger Trout came out of the mullet schools. 3 to 4 inch scaled sardines where the bait of choice floated just above the grass on a popping cork.

The inshore Grouper bite remained steady as well. Vance Tice of Tightlines Tackle reports nice limits of Gag Grouper taken trolling all along the shipping channel edge in 25 to 35 feet of water. A #3 planer and a 4 ounce Jighead trailed by a pink or glow Bubba tail seemed to entice the most strikes. Expect this bite to last only a couple of more weeks as warming water temps will push these fish deep. The offshore bite is still hot as well with limited pressure due to windy conditions there seem to be quality Grouper and Snapper fairly close as well reports of some nice Kingfish finally starting to show.

Fishing Heats Up

This week the fishing has been pretty darn good.  Bait is plentiful again and the fish are eating it.  We still need the water to heat up a bit more but it’s coming.  The trout bite continues to be the best we have seen in years.  There are schools of redfish everywhere but they are still a little skittish but that will change as the water temps increase.  Spanish Mackerel are all over, they can be taken with live bait or casting jigs and/or spoons.  The skyway piers are a good place to fish for them if you don’t have a boat.  If you have a boat trolling spoons with a #1 planner or 3-4oz trolling weight works great.
 
The offshore grouper bite is absolutely on fire.  In the 40-60 foot range is holding plenty of gags and reds.  Vance Tice of Tightlines Tackle has been crushing the gags inside the skyway doing what he does best, trolling with down riggers.  He reports that the 4 oz jig head with the glow and pink tails are working best.  The near shore wrecks are holding Amberjacks and permit to 50 pounds.  The Amberjacks will take white bait, pinfish or jigs worked from the bottom up the harder you work the jig the harder they hit.  Permit will take the D.O.A. Shrimp or live shrimp or crabs about the size of a half dollar.  The King Mackerel have shown up as well.  Look for them around bait pods and diving birds over hard bottom.  Like their smaller cousins live bait and trolling spoons are a sure way to ensure success.

Welcome to Florida

I guess a thank you God is in order.   Finally the break that we have all been praying for is here.  No more cold.  Thank you Jesus.  With the weather finally breaking things are happening.  Bait is back inside the bay and they are the bigger baits ready to spawn.  The redfish are in abundance and should start to strap the feed bag on in the next couple of days.  The Spanish Mackerel have invaded the bay and are easily taken by trolling a small spoon on a # 1 Planner.  The black drum are still around and are easy to find just look for the armada of boats.  The Gulp Shrimp and the DOA Shrimp seem to be the ticket to get them to actually eat your lure.
 
I was offshore for the opening day of Grouper Season and what a great day for it, calm winds and smooth seas.  I fished West Owen and his eleven year old son Colin, from Minnesota.  We started out at 7:00am with a 44 pound black drum for Colin on 15# test, then off to the bridge for bait.  After a while  we finally hade enough bait and we headed west.  Our first stop was some rock piles in 40’ of water; the action was non stop yielding several keeper gags and reds.  The way I was taught to approach this is to start them out on dead bait, (frozen sardines and squid) this gets the smaller fish fired up such as grunts and gets the bottom smelling right for the fish with the bits of food everywhere.  After a while of that, fire down the live bait and hold on.  The water temperature was 73 degrees offshore, I was really expecting to get some Kings as well but not yet.  Reports have them just to the south of us.
