With the Christmas season upon us tis the time of year of the dreaded cold front and low winter tides. As a charter captain that makes his living solely on the water by taking people fishing it is a trying time of year. If you want an accurate weather forecast, simple look at my calendar. If I’m booked solid, the weathers going to be terrible, if I’m open weathers beautiful. For the trips that we are able to run before or during the approaching fronts the fishing is phenomenal. Just this past week Captain Mike and I sat in one spot for over six hours and boated over two hundred trout and snook. The small trout were around the 18” mark and the large ones were over 25”. The snook were at the lower end of the slot and just under. On Wednesday of this week I fished Dennis Linderman and his neighbor Dave. On this trip and the trip Mike and I were together on bait was challenging to get to say the least taking three hours to get with Mike and two hours with Dennis. Captain Mike always says and it’s true get your bait right and you’ll get your bite right. Dennis’s trip was only four hours with about 50 good trout and a few short snook and the we went and hit some docks and we had the man or Elvis which ever you prefer on and it was short lived and back under the dock he did uh went. But that’s the fun of it.
On Tuesday we went off shore with Jim and his son Austin of Pro Marine USA.com and Captain Eric to film an episode of The Reel Animals Fishing Show. We went to a spot and after fishing it I told Captain Eric I would love to have the number, but if it were mine I would not even give it to my mother. Folks it was that incredible. We were free-lining pinfish in 50 foot of water and having 15 pound Gag Grouper crashing baits up top. The smaller fish were on the bottom and the studs were up top. I have never seen a grouper bite that crazy in my 33 years of professional fishing. It was truly a pleasure as this old dog learned a few new tricks.
