A Great time to Fish
The silver lining to our 2 week deep freeze would seem to be a blazing hot Trout bite. As water temps get closer to some kind of normalcy the bay area Trout seem to have taken off. Capt. Woody Gore reports a solid bite in the north end of Tampa Bay while Capt. Steven Markovich reports the Trout bite has taken off down around Fort DeSoto as well. Both Captains said their bites came on live shrimp along with plastics as well. While fishing the down town area this week I found the Trout the surest bite as well. Working the deep rocks along the mouth of the Hillsborough river proved to be the ticket. Using white 3 inch Gulp Shrimp we caught and released several fish in the 20 inch range along with numerous 13 to 16 inch fish. Cold winters usually really help our Trout bite and all signs are pointing to a banner year. Last years Trout bite was good! This could be the best in years. The Sheepshead bite is also in full swing with several area captains reporting good catches. Capt. Mark Thomas of Sun City Center reports loads of big Sheepshead he has been catching out of his airboat in and around the Cockroach Bay area with live shrimp the bait of choice. The bay area Redfish bite has been so-so at best. There are some fish being caught but they have not turned fully on yet. I believe as we come through this next moon phase they will start to heat up. Good Redfish reports coming in from Sarasota Bay though. So ours will crank up soon. Reports coming in from offshore are of a slow Grouper bite but still some nice fish being caught. As the water temps rise out there the bite will improve.
